Internships are an important part of the learning experience, and we work hard to put our students in the best position to land the opportunity that will be right for them. We take a very customized approach to the process that starts with challenging students to brainstorm what exactly they are looking for and how it fits into the overall learning plan.
SOC Films is always looking for an intern who can provide support and efficiency to the production team. Interns are involved in all stages of documentary film production, editing, distribution and public engagement.
Responsibilities include researching a wide variety of topics, from archival media sources to potential funding partners and beyond. They assist with media management and several concurrent projects. Interns will gain hands-on experience with film editing, cinematography, and the pre-production process.
Your tasks may include marketing, script-writing, working alongside an artistic director, and any other part of the production process that goes into making a successful film.
We look for candidates with strong communication and organizational skills, who are passionate about documentary film as a medium for social impact. Interns should be Mac savvy, detail oriented, and skilled at multitasking. Interns must be courteous, professional and reliable. They should have experience in online and library research, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is essential. Working knowledge of the following softwares is preferred but not required: Adobe Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, Final Cut Pro.

I’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to intern at SOC Films. During my internship I was mentored closely by very talented producers, researchers, and filmmakers which allowed me to understand how important film is to make social change. I was able to learn a great variety of skills from script writing to how to navigate various editing softwares. What’s particularly unique about interning at SOC films is the extent of practical experience you get, you are encouraged to go on shoots , conduct interviews and learn first-hand about camera work. I’d encourage anyone interested in social issues, human rights, film making, advocacy , and research to apply for the program!
The internship program at SOC Films, which I was part of from 2018-19, provided an exceptional insight into the real world of international and Pakistani filmmaking. Non-traditionally structured, interns and employees often worked together on film projects and outreach programs alike. As part of this program, interns had the chance to follow film projects from conception — scriptwriting and storyboarding — through post-production, to distribution and outreach. The outreach program in particular was fascinating, giving me a chance to see firsthand the ways in which the films we’d been working on could affect change through education in small local communities. The environment challenged me in the best way, with hands-on learning that contributed greatly to my professional experience and understanding of filmmaking, not only as an artistic practice, but also as a multifaceted and effective medium for change.
I joined SOC Films for a 3-month internship program as a third-year McGill University student. I was interested in exploring documentary filmmaking as the medium to express the issues I am most passionate about. The producers, editors and all members of the team went above and beyond to ensure that the experience met my expectations. I was able to be exposed to vital skills in the production process and contributed to several projects, including a film being screened at the Dubai Film Festival. The highlight of my internship was having my project approved by Sharmeen for SOC’s Minority Digital Platform in which I interviewed four groundbreaking authors and activists on the challenges facing religious minorities in Pakistan.
